For those of you who have never had the luxury of visiting Montreal, you would never guess that Mile End is a trendy, hip area most known for the best bagels in the world (sorry New York, but I give this round to Montreal).
Beyond bagels however is the world famous Poutine (think fries, squeaky cheese curds and a ton of brown gravy smothered on top) and Smoked Meat sandwiches that line the stomachs of drunken locals that pass by Schwartz's Deli on Saint-Laurent st every night. When I say world famous, I mean people travel from far and away to visit this temple of grease.
So now some brave Québécois have decided to see if the recipe will stand with the fussiest of the foodies in the city. Well I can tell you this, as a local Montrealer who has had his share of Poutines and Smoked Meat sandwiches, I can honestly say that this competes well.
Try it out, I believe there's one in Brooklyn and one in Noho which is the one I visited. It's not for the faint of heart, weak minded, diet enthusiasts of the world...but it's pretty damn good and on par to Schwartz's.
Take that Montreal, this is no Katz Deli but the real deal.
